"Coach V", as he is known to hundreds of former players and campers, got his start in coaching thanks to Hoop Historian John Mayberry who hired him to work at the Bill Walton Basketball Camp in 1980. That’s where Coach V met Hoop Historians member Michael Johnson and their friendship started from there. Since then, his many travels have taken him through a whirlwind tour of basketball courts across the region spanning over four decades. Vegso began his professional career in 1976 when he was hired by Cal State Fullerton University as an assistant in the Media Relations Department. In 1980, he was hired as their full-time Sports Marketing
Director and later served as an assistant in the basketball program. Vegso was the Director of Basketball Operations at Bakersfield College, when the team was a runner up in the 1989 team's California Community College Men's Basketball Championship. In 1991, Coach V was appointed assistant coach in charge of shooting and special statistics for the Cleveland Cavaliers entry in the Southern California Pro Summer League held at Loyola Marymount. Vegso continued his coaching career in 2010 as an assistant coach at West Hills College in Coalinga, California. Vern has been the Co-Director of the Pro Tech Camps in Phoenix, has been an On-Floor Director of the J.R. Robinson Intensive Basketball Camps, and has coached at the prestigious Five-Star Basketball Camp for five years. For more than 30 years, Coach Vegso has helped many young student-athletes realize a multitude of their academic, personal and professional goals.  Vern served as the Athletic Development and Marketing Coordinator at Moorpark Community College in California starting in 2013 when he was hired by former Athletic Director Howard Davis. His responsibilities included raising capital, sponsorship pledges, in-kind donations and marketing and promotions. Vern has been a huge asset in our fund-raising efforts, bringing in
more revenue than we had previously raised. More importantly, Vern has advanced Moorpark College Athletics in our surrounding communities. He has really connected our programs to these communities in ways we’ve never done before. “Vern is helping us to spread the word about the great community college athletic program that Moorpark College has had for nearly half a century,” said Athletic Director Howard Davis. Vern retired after his long and successful career in February of 2026.  He was the winner of the 2023 Hoop Historians Hoop Hysteria Contest.
