 Meet the Hoop Historians

 

Mike developed a passion for the fundamentals of basketball while attending Ray Meyer's Camp in the sixties.  Gibbons joined the DePaul University statistics crew in 1969 under the mentorship of fellow Hoop Historian John McCann.  From 1970 to 2008 alongside of statistician Joe Makowski, Mike was a member of the DePaul stats crew that recorded over 750 games.  His tenure saw the expansion of keeping only points and fouls to the evolution of a computerized boxscore that included specialty statistics and a chronological play-by-play of every action that took place on the court.  Mike was also a basketball game day crew member for the 1992 NCAA Womens' Regional Final, the Chicago Hustle Womens' Pro Basketball Team, the Chicago Skyliners Mens' Developmental Team, the Big Ten Tournament and the McDonald's All-American Game.  Gibbons was a student-athlete with DePaul's Track and Cross Country teams from 1970-1974  and later graduated from the Loyola University School of Dentistry and maintains a private practice on Chicago's northwest side.  A life-long White Sox fan, Mike attended the last game in Comiskey Park in 1990 and the inaugural Opening Day Game U.S. Cellular Field in 1991.
