Bill is a life-long coach starting out as a part-time assistant coach at the University of Minnesota in 1969.  Gappy was the winningest basketball coach in Michigan Tech history where he coached from 1972 to 1985.  During the 1979-80 season, Bill led the Huskies to their only outright league title in the history of the program.  For his efforts he was named Northern Intercollegiate Conference Coach of the Year and honored by his peers as Michigan’s Small College Coach of the Year.  Gappy was inducted into the Michigan Tech Hall of Fame in 1996.  Bill was also inducted into the Upper Peninsula Sports Hall of Fame in 2005.  He was a football, basketball, baseball and track athlete at Alpena High School in Michigan, where he was inducted into that school’s Hall of Fame in 2004.  Since leaving coaching, Gappy has worked in sales and promotions for Horner Flooring, a company which provides basketball floors for the Final Four.
